What Software Do I Use?

Quite a lot actually. Let's see...

The Operating System

Linux, mostly the Ubuntu distribution. Yes, that sounds very boring, and that's mostly because it is, but It Just Works(tm) and I like tinkering with my own software better these days. (I do customise it a bit though).

Lately I have been using CachyOS more and more, and it has been great, so it will likely replace Ubuntu on my desktops/laptops everywhere in the near-ish future.

Editors

  • vim
  • JetBrains PyCharm (with vim bindings and Material Darker theme)
  • Obsidian for notetaking and building out my second brain

The Browser

Firefox.

Other Software

A lot of terminal use.

  • mc: file management with two panes, in the terminal.

Mobile

Android phone, Titan 2 Elite keyboard phone as primary, and a Pixel (now as secondary device) because the software is pretty fine and the camera's are up my alley. I love taking pictures.

  • Obsidian
  • Termux, with vim and Git
  • FairEmail for email
  • FluffyChat and Element-X for Matrix chat
  • weechat-android for IRC, makes connection to weechat on one of my servers
  • TickTick for todo
  • Symfonium and PlexAmp for music through Navidrome and Plex respectively
  • Poweramp for music stored locally on my phone (works great with high-quality audio dongles like those from Hidisz)
  • CoMaps for detailed maps derived from OpenStreetmap, for when I'm hiking or biking.

Self-hosting

Now this is fun, as you can do so much things yourself.

  • Mail, with exim4 and dovecot.
  • Websites, with nginx and gunicorn for Python for example.
  • Syncthing: synchronisation of files not under version control
  • Git: version control of notes, source code, correspondence, presentations and more, using Forgejo
  • Paperless: archive and find back all your invoices, important documents and manuals
  • Navidrome: music server
  • Plex: media server
  • Immich: photo collection software
  • Webhaak: webhook automation tool to update websites/-apps on Git push, or handle other incoming information, like RSS webhooks to chat
  • Digimarks: online bookmarking tool

Why do you keep all your old laptops?

Reasons. Also, pretty handy to try software on without having to fear breaking a daily driver/important system.

Desktop

  • AMD GPU, for all the games and driving my screens (I love having multiple monitors)

Laptops

  • ThinkPads are pretty neat. Got two of them over the years, second hand. T480s and T14 AMD gen 1.

What would be your dream setup?

Linux-based mobile computing. I'm actually prototyping a bit already.
