Trying out SpiderOak instead of Dropbox
Have you looked at SpiderOak? It's a Dropbox competitor and way more secure. Use this link with referral to get more space if you sign up (it's free etc). If you do use that link, also use the promo code "WORLDBACKUPDAY" in addition to going there via the special link and you get more space (6GB instead of 2GB, so a significant improvement!)
I found it through VillainROM's twitteraccount and edited only slightly. It looks great though!
One
This morning one year ago I was eating breakfast at my parents' place, anticipating seeing my bride for the first time in her beautiful dress. The day that followed was a whirlwind of really great moments and happenings, leading us to be married at a beautiful castle, then celebrating it with all people dear to us in a party that went on till about the next morning :)
This morning at least I was allowed to wake up laying aside my wife, but there will only a party for two today. Don't call if you need us, we're not here ;)
dammIT exists for 7.5 years now!
This weblog has been in existence for 7.5 years today, all the while serving me as a focus point of ranting on various aspects of my personal and professional life. These rants (longer and short) are generally musings on things that annoy me, technical subjects of interest to me, announcements and updates about my personal life and random finds. I drop links into the blogmarks overview, hoping you will enjoy them too. I post vacation pics, announce great things and more. Even though Twitter has made the update rate a lot slower, I still see it as my go-to place for, well, my brain/heart-internet interface.
This all my sound a bit sentimental, but it's just that I like being online and frankly, I like this weird little Internet corner of mine. I created some other corners too, which might just grow in the years to come, but here you're just alone with me and my obsessions. Might be scary, I know, but I like your company :)
Also, don't forget to enjoy the summer ^_^
When Wordpress 404's aren't
Today I helped a colleague troubleshooting a form in one of our Wordpress websites that returned a "404 Page not found"-error when it was submitted to itself. Of course, this was rather puzzling as the address was exactly the same as the page where you just filled the form on. After a morning of digging into rewriting rules, Wordpress templating, disabling the numerous plugins and more debugging - partly helped by another colleague, the guy spoke an irritated "I really don't get this crap" (paraphrased ;) ).
I asked what was going on and together we dug into the code. After verifying the url was really correct and digging a bit through xdebug logs, I got the idea that the uri-routing was a red herring. After a good look at the form in question, we changed some of its field names and - oh miracle - things worked. It turned out that fields with names like "name" have some sort of reserved use and screw with the hidden Wordpress magic (or maybe some of the plugins in question).
I seem to be employee of the day now ^_^
Books!
I've been reading a lot more since starting my new job and being able to relax in public transports with a book instead of sleeping behind the wheel. I even got myself an e-reader (a black Sony PRS-650, really great piece of machinery! Yes, Sony may be evil, but they know how to build a decent e-paper device). I also tend to keep my computers turned off in the evenings and relax on the couch with a great tv-series or my book. The latter goes a long way into getting some serious reading done.
As I was somehow challenged to see how much I could read in a year, I started recording when I began reading in a new book. Generally, this means I finished the previous one shortly before that as I tend to read continuously. To let you have a peek into what's entering my brain, I created a book overview page, which you find in the main navigation of this weblog.
To continue in this light, I might be compelled to do a 'review' of some of those books in the future. Not a really literate review, but more a 'this is what I thought of it' about some of the more interesting works. You might be inspired a bit even :)

Applying Thunderbird's column settings to all your folders
I grew increasingly tired changing the column settings of the folders of my IMAP account in Thunderbird; I don't need the 'Read', 'Junk' and 'Thread icon' columns for example, but would like to have the 'Size' listed. However, I needed to change that for all of my dozens of mail folders...
Then I found the following solution (work in Thunderbird 3.1 and up). To apply the current set of columns to all folders:
- Right-click on the columns
- Select "Apply columns to..."
- Select "Folder and its children..."
- Select the root folder for your account
- Done! You have applied the set of columns to all folders in your account.
Done!
