[Flash] Ordering a pizza, with a(n intelligence) twist
We are on our way to a society where this kind of intelligence is being made available; you don't want to have that accessible to anyone right?
Tilera gooses 64-core mesh processor
Interesting to see a promising hardware platform (in this case, CPU and memory management) that do away with old, not always that efficient techniques and introduce smart changes. I hope to see more of these in (mainstream?) hardware soon
Fake popup study sadly confirms most users are idiots
Follow-up questions revealed that the students seemed to find any dialog box a distraction from their assigned task; nearly half said that all they cared about was getting rid of these dialogs. The results suggest that a familiarity with Windows dialogs have bred a degree of contempt and that users simply don't care what the boxes say anymore.
Thank you, Microsoft, for teaching users not to care by annoying them to dead...
NewClear Energy - Clear is the new Green
As windmills, solarvoltaic cells and such aren't really that environment neutral (they take a *lot* of resources to create) and nuclear reactors aren't in the league of "Chernobyl" for ages anymore, I think this lobby club is quite interesting. For example, I think it would be interesting to see a Pebble bed reactor or the like here in the Netherlands. It's really safe and quite clean with a lot less waste than older techniques.
Vending Machine Delivers Freshly Cooked Pizzas in 90-Seconds
Now that's kinda cool. I guess it stretches the concept of "fresh" a bit though; I wonder how they complete it in 90 seconds - maybe some high-powered toaster-like device or something
Some Xubuntu / xfce4 tweaks
Especially interesting is the one to remove the "super" function from the windows key, so you can bind it in Keyboard settings - Shortcuts to show the xfce4 menu. This wouldn't work otherwise, as it would act as a modifier, needing another key to combine with.
To your ~/.Xmodmap file add:
remove mod4 = Super_L
Flickr pool of photos taken through viewfinders of old cameras
Awesome vintage looking pictures
Ghost of a Printing Press
Beautiful picture of the place where a colour printing press used to stand. Also check this beautiful toner explosion.
DeepaMehta
DeepaMehta is a software platform for Knowledge Management. Knowledge is represented in a semantic network and is handled collaboratively. DeepaMehta combines interdisciplinary research with the idea of Open Source to generate a true benefit for workflow as well as for social processes. At the same time Deepa Mehta is an indian movie director.
Semantic knowledge representation. Interesting for braindumps and such.
Beautiful, perfect, supreme chunk of paper
What is the most flexible, intelligent, interactive data retrieval system yet to appear?
It's the book.
They make an interesting point with this article, but skip a bit on the ease of a search-function and hyperlinks possible in an e-book. If you have a decent e-book reader, meaning it will display content (be it text or images) in a high resolution (the screen of the Nokia N810 starts coming close), transflective or reflective screen (causing great contrast which eases reading, like e-paper), this may just rival a paper edition of a book. Also, this enables you to take a whole series with you, which is a lot easier to use as reference when on a trip than a backpack full of hefty paper.
Read more of my thoughts in the post I decided to turn this into :)
Dan Sweeney: There's No Arguing With Conservatives ... No, Seriously, Scientific Studies Prove It
Huh, now that's a WTF
Large Hadron Collider is 42 - LHC is the Answer
Coincidence? I think not.
The Complete History of Nintendo
With the story here. It's split up in several short pages though...
FM 100 Hue Test - Test your color IQ
Drag and drop the colors in each row to arrange them by hue order. Be sure to use a decent monitor.
Ugly Qua and other fonts
Great font to use on Talk Like a Pirate Day. Found through Matt Cutts' weblog.
Firefox add-on: Chrome Package
If you really want to let your Firefox look like Google's Chrome
syntaxhighlighter - highlight code (snippets) on your website
In a quite pretty way. Javascript based, but light weight and no need to change things on your server.
Big data: Welcome to the petacentre
Great article on big data centers, copies of the web, CERN and more. By Cory Doctorow for Nature. Also see this Dutch article on the Large Hadron Collider and its data center.
Saudi judge condemns 'immoral TV'
The most senior judge in Saudi Arabia has said it is permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV channels which broadcast immoral programmes.
[...]
Given his position as the country's most senior judge, the sheikh's views can not be easily dismissed, says BBC Arab affairs analyst, Magdi Abdelhadi.
Clerics like Sheikh al-Luhaydan represent a huge dilemma for the Saudi royal family, our correspondent adds.
On the one hand, Saudi rulers need their support to claim that they rule in the name of Islam.
But on the other hand, fighting militant Islam can be difficult when the country's top judge calls for the beheading of those he views as immoral broadcasters.
Always fun when influential people start saying things like that. Makes it even harder to govern a country that way.
Coworker.nl - Coworking spots in The Netherlands
Great initiative; if you need a place to crash for a day and be productive while enjoying some coffee and such, look here
Japan tops world broadband study
And to think a few years ago, most internet access was done through mobile phones in Japan (and maybe still is). In Europe, the Netherlands take a comfortable second place behind Sweden. Now where stays the 100MBit/gigabit fiber to my home, with a nice ethernet box in the closet?
Bedpost - Ever wonder how often you get busy?
People on IRC tend to paste weird links. This one is one of them; why would you want to post info/stats on the special-quality time you spend with your partner and even during the act? Might be interesting for women devouring students or something...
Laptop delivers all-day computing
24 hours of battery life with your HP laptop. Wow.
Largest creator of all political talking action figures
This is plain weird. And quite awesome
Getting Left Behind
The main kicker of the news piece is this:
12 percent of the districts 8th graders are proficient in reading.
12%. Only 12%.
They're telling us that only 12% of DC's 14 year olds can read proficiently.
FIFO Madness
Wow. Best tech post I've read in a while. Gives some good insight in developing new stuff. Recommended read :)
About Sarah Palin: an e-mail from Wasilla
A story about McCain's vice president nominee from someone who knows her personally. Her track record of governing doesn't sound all that sunny. (Her pro-life, anti homo-rights aren't speaking for her too, IMHO).
[Dutch] Astrologie is onzin. En ja, dat is erg
I'm a bit ambivalent to astrology done by serious people, but there's a lot of rubbish [like those generic horoscopes, always good for a laugh]. As a scientist I have to agree with the issues this astrophysicist raises
[Dutch] Palin voor President
It's a column, it's unsubtle, but he has some good points. Especially the black/white thinking [exclusive-or] of the US politics is oversimplified. It's a brilliant move from McCain to choose her as running mate though. A lot of people will identify with her. Oh well, we'll see
Anthropomorphic cuddly lights: LightMate
Can electric energy fill the void of human absence? LightMates are soft anthropomorphic pillows and warming lamps.
Heh, funny
Nokia announces Ntropic Nseries phone/tablet harmony (as if)
Now if this could become reality. We really need some better synching functionality for mobile devices...
