Hubble Space Telescope Advent Calendar 2008
Some really awesome pictures (and interesting background info). Also, for added fun, look for a few moments at the first image and think "Someone set up us the bomb!".

Straighten warped/tilted pieces of your photographs in the Picasa photo management tool
Brand New: Best & Worst 2008
Best and worst logo changes of the past year. There are some fine ones and some damn stupid/ugly ones (seriously, Pepsi, what's up with that?)

Handy tip how to organise all core dumps into one central dir
Battle at Kruger
Wow, that's one hell of a nature movie; buffalo's come across lions, lions attack calf and then the interesting part begins. Watch it through, this is a nature movie worth watching :)
Weebl Advent Calendar
Too much holiday-season sillyness on one calendar. Some are rather silly, but there are a few awesome ones in there (a very catchy one is this Santas track and this happy Santa song). A very funny one about Lapland (imho) is also one you should see.
Konica C35
The first photo camera I knew, the one my dad used back in the days. He still has it, including the external flash. Good times
Micro-Max: chess application in 1200 characters
Scary compact program. His goal was 1024, but 1200 is still quite scary (source available and worth a quick peek)
If programming languages were religions...
Ruby would be Neo-Paganism - A mixture of different languages and ideas that was beaten together into something that might be identified as a language. Its adherents are growing fast, and although most people look at them suspiciously, they are mostly well-meaning people with no intention of harming anyone.

Visual Basic would be Satanism - Except that you don't REALLY need to sell your soul to be a Satanist...
Nice ones :)
Bluetooth headset support past and future
The ~/.asound snippet sort of worked for me, but I ended up using Skype on my Nokia N810 anyway
Hierarchy of Beards: the evolutionary history of face-fur
Heh, fun overview
[Dutch] Apple koopt Ster reclameblok on Vimeo
Old TV advertisement (25 years old) by Apple on the Dutch national TV. It's the Apple Movie preceded by a female presenter lauding the Macintosh and Powerbook (first series, it's so light!). After the Apple Movie in which Jean-Michel Jarre, Niki Lauda and Javier Mariscal tell the world how much they love working with Apple's and being on top of tech and being inspired in their art and such, the presenter proceeds with telling how the public can win one of 25 Powerbooks.
It's quite funny to see the state-of-the-art from then, and the super-sweet (stomachpain inducing) way the woman in the movie converts from not doing `computers' to loving her Apple and all people around it. Quite a fun trip down memory lane :)
Inside Google Book Search: Search physical books with Android
That's damn nifty

Piece about a guy that found a debit card skimming device on one of the payment terminals of our national railway company, took it home and dissected it before turning it in with th police
9/11, just like the movies
Really nice composition of scenes from movies set to piano music, replaying the events of that famous Tuesday. If you have troubles seeing it in your browser, use this direct download link (right click, save as).

Celebrating Nikolaus in Germany
More info on that guy that we here in the Netherlands also see now and then, bringing presents and showering kids with candy (no, not Santa, that's actually a rip-off of Sint Nikolaas
Time Slider Screencast
Now that looks fucking awesome and usable (excuse le mot, it's just that I think ZFS and the integration into the file manager finally brings some innovations on the desktop into the real world)
Netherlands - the content-free encyclopedia
Whoa, that's, like, insanely accurate!
Thunderbird 3 beta 1 - a platform for innovation shapes up
Hm, interesting new features, especially those add-ons. Might even go back to using Thunderbird instead of Claws-mail. The Lightning add-on already syncs well with Google Calendar. Hm... (Now to get my phone to sync with Google Calendar and then Google knows all about my personal life :)

On Why I Don't Like Auto-Scaling in the Cloud - O'Reilly Broadcast
Interesting and quite valid points on not doing auto-scaling, but rather stick with dynamic scaling and capacity planning.
N800 As A Baby Monitor 'Gizmo'
Interesting howto for creating an easy baby monitor from two Nokia Internet Tablets (NIT) and VoIP. You can even call it from a PSTN number (regular landline), but having video is even nicer of course.
With Nokia you're not just a consumer
Today's N97 launch reminded me of a big mental difference between using Nokia or Apple phones: with Apple, you're merely a consumer, where Nokia's devices allow you to participate in the information flow, to be a producer. Back in 1932, Bertrand Russel wrote:
The pleasures of urban populations have become mainly passive: seeing cinemas, watching football matches, listening to the radio, and so on. This results from the fact that their active energies are fully taken up with work; if they had more leisure, they would again enjoy pleasures in which they took an active part.
The whole N series of devices seems dedicated for allowing you to take that active part: decent cameras, video recording capability, reasonably good keyboards. Not so with the iPhone.
Dagen då larverna kom till Flogsta
Scary pictures of completely encapsulated trees, bicycles and more. Weird caterpillars...
